#TourNigeria: A Visit to 'Alagba' the 300yr old Tortoise

By Dr. Raphael James
Squatting over ‘Alagba’, the over 300 years old giant male land tortoise in the palace of the Afin of Ogbomoso. I asked my tour guard how come they know he is age, since obviously no human being there is more than 1500 years, he explained that it is based on oral history.
The tortoise was brought to the palace by Soun Ikumoyede Ajao, the third Soun of Ogbomoso, who is believed to have been born sometime in the late 16th century and who reigned in the 17th century.
During the reign of (King) Oba Toyeje Akanni (1797 to 1825), the fourth Soun and one time Are Ona Kakanfo of the Yoruba land, the tortoise was already a popular site in the palace.
