Department of Tourism nabs top award

Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, said he was proud of Tourism Department after receiving National Batho Pele Excellence Award.
The Department of Tourism has received the Best Functioning National Department of the Year award from the 2016 National Batho Pele Excellence Awards.
The awards recognise and promote improved public servants’ performance as well as a professional and productive public service.
Tourism Minister, Derek Hanekom, said he was proud of the department. “The gold award affirms that our vision and plans to grow the tourism industry are on the right track.”
The Department of Tourism was among 38 departments that were assessed within the category. The assessment considered areas of strategic planning, finances, operational planning, management and implementation, and the impact of the work done by the department on its beneficiaries and the broader society.
In 2015/16, the department achieved more that 85% on its performance targets and received a clean audit from the Auditor General.
Victor Tharage, Director General of Tourism, received the Best Director General of the Year award.
